Parties are key organizations in the political process. They link society to the level of decision-making, they are indispensable in aggregating and articulating individual interests as well as moderating and balancing them with a notion of the common good. the seminar will scrutinize the history of German parties before 1945 and discuss their development after World War II until today. The changing conditions of party competition, the role of parties in the political system, their internal structures as well as reform proposals will be dealt with.
